SADIT-MAR Webinar 8: A Perspective on Structural Integrity, System Condition and Load Monitoring

· By Umit Gunes · 2 min read

Our 8th Monthly Webinar Series will continue with a perspective on structural integrity, system condition, and load monitoring for marine structures by Franz von Bock und Polach.

The webinar addresses aspects of structural integrity, system condition, and load monitoring. The three categories are addressed with selected examples and ongoing developments. Furthermore, a link is established to methods of digitalization and machine learning that support improved use of marine structures and systems and their condition. Current developments in the industry and the developing interfaces with classification societies are introduced, and potential future scenarios are sketched. Ultimately, developments in other industries are discussed, with their potential applications to marine engineering.

Franz von Bock und Polach is a naval architect by training and holds an engineering degree from the Technical University of Berlin in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. After his studies, he has been working in the offshore industry for Allseas and works, among other things, on the design of the Pioneering Spirit. Later, he joined the Helsinki University of Technology as a researcher and became the laboratory manager of the Aalto ice tank at Aalto University. In 2016, he graduated with a Doctor of Science and PhD with a joint degree from Aalto University and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. In 2016, he joined the Institute for Ship Structural Design and Analysis at the Hamburg University of Technology, where he has served as director since 2022. Prior to this, he had a part-time professorship at Hamburg University for Ocean Dynamics in a Changing Climate. His research and fields of interest cover ship structural design, ship vibrations, fatigue, ice mechanics, ships in ice, ice loads, and the interaction between marine engineering and climate dynamics. His research covers experimental, numerical, and data analysis.
